Sun Safety Tips for Your Children This Summer

Parents love to watch their kids run around in the sun or enjoy a fun day of swimming at the beach or pool.  However, it is important to remember that even a few minutes of unprotected sunlight can cause sunburn, which can lead to other problems for kids later on in life.  Follow these sun safety tips to keep the outdoor fun going all summer long.

Sunscreen.  Of course, sunscreen is the best protection against the sun’s harmful rays.  Be sure to apply it generously at least 30 minutes before the child is exposed to direct sunlight and choose a sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher.  Don’t forget to cover up the nose, ears, hands, shoulders, and neck.

Water.  Drinking water is one of the best summer safety tips for kids.  It is hard to gauge whether a child is dehydrated, so offering them water at every opportunity is important.  While they are running and sweating in the sun, they will need more water than they regularly would.  Also, use a lip balm with SPF to protect from the sun and prevent dry, cracked lips.

Cover.  Wearing hats, protective clothing, and swim shirts can ward off the effects of UV damage on a child’s skin.  Sunglasses are also a great way to protect a child’s eyes, and even babies can sport a cute hat and sunglasses for a fun day in the sun.  Bringing an umbrella to the beach or the park is another way to ensure that there is a shady space to get out of the sun for a time.

Timing.  While this is not always possible, avoiding the hottest hours of the day is one of the most helpful sun safety tips.  The hours between 10 a.m. and 4p.m. are when the sun’s rays are strongest and most harmful, so if they can be avoided for outdoor playtime, they should be.  If a child does end up playing in the sun during these hours, be sure to liberally apply sunscreen.

One of the best ways to have fun cooling off in the summer heat is to spend hours with the kids in the pool.  In Charlotte, pool safety and water safety are a number one priority for families with kids of any age.  Follow these summer safety tips for fun in the sun all summer long.

1.  Wear sunscreen.  Kids can be prone to get sunburned even within a few minutes of being in the sun unprotected, so it is important to slather on the sunscreen every single time they swim.  Swim shirts for both boys and girls are also a great way to protect from the sun’s harmful rays.

2.  Avoid drains and pipes.  While all pools are required to adhere to water safety regulations, children should still be taught to steer clear of the plumbing, which can be hazardous in rare situations.

3.  Keep a first-aid kit nearby.  Treating scrapes and bumps right away can help prevent infection and allow for the kids to get right back in the pool.

4.  Don’t allow running or horseplay.  A child could slip and fall into a hard surface, push someone in accidentally, or fall into the pool themselves.

5.  Set boundaries.  When kids know their limitations, they are more comfortable and better behaved, especially in the water.

6.  It is essential never to allow children to swim without supervision.  A responsible adult should be present and alert whenever kids are playing in the pool.

7.  Smaller pools aren’t safer.  Wherever there is standing water, there is a chance for a dangerous situation to occur.  Whether kids are splashing around in a child’s pool, a hot tub, or a larger pool, they always need to be monitored.

8.  Watch for lightning.  Even if the rain hasn’t quite arrived, lighting in the distance is a reason to get out of the water and back inside the house.

9.  Take breaks.  Kids rarely notice how tired they are getting in the pool, but with the combination of the sun overhead and the added exercise of being in the water, sometimes it happens faster than they would like.  Parents should be aware if a child needs to get out of the pool because of exhaustion.

10.  Do not step away, even for a moment.  Sneaking inside just to change the laundry or put away dishes could end in disaster.  If something really needs to be done inside, then the kids need get out of the pool and come inside as well.
